One of the highlights in Core’s history was the visit of the leading writer and practitioner in our field, author of Getting to Yes, William Ury, in 2009. Few of the over 100 people who attended his Master Class in The Hub on Castle Hill will forget that day. Many will also recall the video link between John Sturrock and William Ury during Collaborative Scotland’s Day of Dialogue prior to the Scottish independence referendum in September 2014.
We are thrilled that William Ury is coming back to Scotland in May. He will present at another full day event on Monday 14 May, again at The Hub. Registration details below. View the provisional programme. Dr Ury will also talk about his work helping to try to find solutions to the dangerous North Korean situation.
William will also be the keynote speaker on Saturday 12th of May at the conference of the International Academy of Mediators in Edinburgh, speaking in the Chamber of the Scottish Parliament. The conference itself will attract over 150 participants from around the world. This is a huge honour for Edinburgh and Scotland.
John Sturrock writes about these upcoming events, along with the pre-conference lecture by Professor Hal Abramson, in a recent article in The Scotsman, entitled "Are you your own worst enemy? Think about it", which can be read here.
William Ury, co-founder of Harvard’s Program on Negotiation, is one of the world’s leading experts on negotiation and mediation. He is currently a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Harvard Negotiation Project.
He is co-author with Roger Fisher and Bruce Patton of Getting to Yes, a fifteen-million-copy bestseller translated into over thirty-five languages, and the author of Getting Past No, The Power of a Positive No, The Third Side, and, most recently, the award-winning Getting to Yes with Yourself.
Over the past thirty-five years, William has served as a negotiation adviser and mediator in conflicts ranging from Kentucky wildcat coal mine strikes to ethnic wars in the Middle East, the Balkans, and former Soviet Union, and most recently in Colombia, where he has served as a senior advisor to President Juan Manuel Santos.
With former US president Jimmy Carter, William co-founded the International Negotiation Network, a non-governmental body seeking to end civil wars around the world. He has taught negotiation and mediation to tens of thousands of corporate executives, labour leaders, diplomats, and military officers around the world.
